I had the strangest thing happen yesterday. Someone phoned and asked if we carried puzzles.
“What do you mean by puzzles?” I asked. Rubiks Cube is a puzzle. Could be a Jig-saw puzzle that he’s looking for.
Turns out he was talking about boxes that seem impossible to open and metal things that come apart, if you know how, etc.
We do carry a little clear box that you can’t open unless you know how. I also have something called Viz Escape that’s a puzzle. But that was the extent of my puzzles. Or so I thought. And I didn’t think about it any more until 5 minutes later a guy comes in and asks if we have any puzzles.
“Oh,” I said, ” you must be the person that just phoned me.”
“No,” he said, “I never phoned.”
So I was out of stock of the Treasure Box, mentioned above, and he wasn’t interested in Viz, which I think is excellent and only $3.50, but he was here in the store and I thought that 3 ropes of 3 different sizes that all change to the same size is a puzzle. Right? You can hand them out. They can check them out. It’s a puzzle. So I did a demo for him.
Are not many magic tricks puzzles? When you can hand them out without them being able to discover the secret its a puzzle.
After my demo he said he knows how I did it. He used to do magic and he complimented me on my performance.
In the end he bought marked cards. But it got me thinking. There are lots of puzzles in magic. How about Thumbcuffs?
So I have come to the conclusion that there are items that could be a puzzle or can also be magic. It all depends on the presentation.
Any thoughts on that?
